456 Dictionaries Provided to Students Through the Dictionary Project
The Rotary Club of Kahului is a partner in promoting education via the "The Dictionary Project". The story about how this project began can be found at: www.DictionaryProject.org)
The objective of the project is to provide dictionaries to third grade students throughout America to keep and use as their own personal reference books. The Rotary Club of Kahului is one of several District 5000 Clubs that are participating in this effort. Other civic organizations also participate. While measureable results do not exist to demonstrate the impact of donating the dictionaries, one can tell from the expressions on the faces of the kids that they are most appreciative of these valuable tools that will add to their knowledge and education - today and in the future.
This year our club used a combination of District Simplified Grant allocation and donations from the "Dictionary 100 Club" made by participating members in the previous fisca year. A total of 456 dictionaries were purchased for 3rd graders at Lihikai Elementary, Kahului Elementary, and Ka`ahumanu Hou private schools and students at MEO Youth Bank, Boys and Girls Club, and Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations.
Mahalo to Joel Rand and Tony Levoy from our club who made donations via the "Dictionary 100 Club" in Fiscal Year 2008-09. Their donations will provide seed money for next year's program.
