ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA & NOMINATION PROCESS

 

 

2011 Palaka Award Plaque


To recognize outstanding long-term volunteer service to nonprofit organizations, the Rotary Club of Kahului has revived the Michael H. Lyons II Palaka Award.  Created in honor of Mike’s tireless community support, the award is named for the signature palaka shirts he wore.

 

We will recognize the 15 finalists and announce the Palaka Award winner at the King Kamehameha Golf Club during a special luncheon on Friday, June 24.  Nominees for the award exemplify the highest ideals of volunteer service to a nonprofit organization. Nominations can be made online at www.KahuluiRotary.com beginning May 1, 2011. Deadline for online submittal of nominations is Friday, May 20, 2011 at 5:00pm HST.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 

 

The Rotary Club of Kahului is looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • The individual selected has devoted a minimum of ten (10) years of service either as a Board member or as a member of a working/standing committee of a Maui County nonprofit organization.
  • The individual must have made a contribution that is both significant and enduring. 
  • The individual’s consistent service to this organization demonstrates commitment and dedication to the nonprofit’s mission and vision.
  • In representing the organization, the individual embodies the Aloha spirit and genuine care and compassion for fellow volunteers, staff, and the constituents served.
  • The individual exemplifies the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” and upholds an ethical code of conduct in alignment with the Rotary “Four-Way Test”:

1.      Is it the TRUTH?

2.     Is it FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?

3.     Will it build GOODWILL & BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4.     Will it be BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED?

 

 

**Rotary Club of Kahului members are not eligible for nomination

 

 

OTHER INFORMATION & SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Please contact Amy Hampton at ahampton@aloha-house.org or 579-8414 x8118 with any questions regarding the nomination and selection process.  Submit all required materials (see list below) no later than 5:00pm May 20 to Amy Hampton via the above email address.  Please do not submit any materials that have not been requested.

 

  • Complete the nomination form online (www.kahuluirotary.com) beginning May 1, 2011.

 

  • Each essay question response may be no more than 100 words.
  • Submit a PDF version of the nominee’s chronology of service to the organization – one (1) page maximum that cites board positions, committee assignments, and years of service.  Make sure to cite significant achievements that occurred under their leadership or as a direct result of their service.
  • Submit two (2) letters of support, each one (1) page maximum, in PDF version.
  • Submit high-resolution, “headshot” digital photo of the nominee (if selected as a finalist, we may ask for additional photos).

 

Only one nomination packet per nominee may be submitted to the Selection Committee.

 

Nomination may be disqualified if submission does not follow the outlined directions and criteria.

 


 

SELECTION PROCESS & TIMELINE

 

  • Selection of the winner shall be solely determined by the Kahului Rotary Club Board and committee members. Selection committee members will recuse themselves from the process if a candidate is nominated by their organization.

 

  • Up to 15 finalists will be selected from the pool of nominees and will be recognized along with the 2011 Palaka Award winner at the June 24th Luncheon.

 

  • Finalists and their nominators will be notified via email on June 1, 2011; we’ll also announce finalists on our website and via FaceBook.

 

  • Luncheon tickets are available for $48 each or $450 for a table of 10. Each finalist’s event ticket is complimentary. Nominators/supporters are encouraged to attend and can purchase tickets at www.KahuluiRotary.com

 

  • The winner is given a perpetual hand-carved award plaque, which may be displayed in a location of their choice (usually the nonprofit organization’s office) for 12 months, along with a personalized plaque s/he will keep.
